Exciting season at University of Toronto
U
niversity of Toronto has had a very
exciting season! On December 4,
2013 the department held itsAnnual
Faculty Assembly chaired by Donna Barker,
director of fieldwork and chair of the Com-
munity Relations Committee. The theme of
the assembly was
Entrepreneurialism in
Occupational Therapy
with presentations by
Dr. Nick Reed and occupational therapy
student Sean Fleming. The assembly was
attended by over 100 core, status, adjunct and
faculty members in addition to community
partners who were presented with Com-
munity Partner Teaching Awards.
Dr. Colantonio’s CIHR Chair in Gender
Work and Health was celebrated with special
guests, University of Toronto Chancellor the
Honourable Michael Wilson; CIHR Institute
for Gender Work and Health Director Dr. Joy
Johnson; and Dr. Peter Lewis, U of T
Associate Vice-President, Research and
Innovation. Chancellor Wilson gave an
impassioned address on brain and mental
health, followed by stimulating insights from
Dr. Johnson and support for CIHR Chair and
the department from Dr. Lewis.
The 2013 Research Symposium focused
on faculty members’ research in brain
injuries and mental health, complex diseases
and systems management, human develop-
ment and global health and was attended by
scientific directors of research institutes,
consumer organizations representatives,
alumni, teaching faculty and students. Please

We are very excited to announce the
appointment of Dr. Mary Stergiou-Kita and
Dr. Heather Colquhoun! Dr. Stergiou-Kita’s
research focuses on return to work following
traumatic brain injuries and other complex
conditions, building knowledge and practices
in community and workplace integration and
inclusive strategies for marginalized popula-
tions.
Dr. Colquhoun’s research focuses on
knowledge translation addressing the depart-
ment’s broad goals of advancing effective
and cost-effective occupational therapy
practices. Dr. Stergiou-Kita began her
appointment on January 1, 2014 and Dr.
Colquhoun will join the department on July
1, 2014 when she completes her Canadian
Institutes of Health Research post-doctoral
fellowship.
Finally, Dr. Susan Rappolt was reap-
pointed for a second five-year term as chair
of the department. Dr. Alex Mihailidis has
been appointed as acting chair during Dr.
Rappolt’s six month administrative leave.

TheAssociation of Canadian Occupational Therapy Univer-
sity Programs, the chairs and faculty of the 14 member programs
express their deep sadness about the loss of our colleague Barbara
Worth. Barbara was a committed occupational therapist through-
out her many career roles, including as a long-serving registrar of
the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and a leader in
the Association of Canadian Occupational Therapy Regulatory
Organizations.
