Evolution of a
marvellous project:
The Interprofessional University
Clinic at the University of Ottawa
by Claire-Jehanne Dubouloz, full professor, Jacinthe
Savard, assistant professor, School of Rehabilitation
Sciences, Occupational Therapy Program, Estelle Ethier,
director of education and services, Interprofessional
University Clinic in Primary Health Care
A
s many of you may be aware, the School of Rehabilita-
tion at the University of Ottawa has invested physically,
mentally and spiritually in an interprofessional univer-
sity clinic since 2006! This extremely creative endeavour came
from our very talented OT professors who are not shy to think
outside the box. The multi-layer levels of training: college
students, undergrad and graduate university students; 10 different
health care professions; and clinical experience through
observation, or direct individual service and/or group interven-
tions, all provide an amazing opportunity for students to learn.
Students are able to offer services to clients while learning their
own role in the clinical reality of collaboration with different
professions, what their responsibilities are and what modalities
of treatment are best. This very exciting learning situation with
future colleagues gives a sense of community and helps to
strengthen professional self-identity. Imagine, since 2007, more
than 600 students have had the opportunity to do their fieldwork
placements in such a great learning environment.
We can report on three big developments. The very big news
is that after months of presenting data inside and outside the fac-
ulty and the university, preparing comprehensive dossiers
for financial support, and joining forces to find
ACOTUP/ACPUE is a national organization
that promotes and develops occupational therapy
education and research with an understanding
of issues in a global context.
